Born and raised in northern Michigan, Ethan has been fishing the area as long as he can remember. From his first flies in the Au Sable and Jordan, to fishing the west Michigan tribs during his years at Ferris State, the passion was instilled at an early age. After graduating college, Ethan attended Sweetwater Travel Company's Fly Fishing Guide School, where he gained the skills required of today's professional guides. One thing led to another, and Ethan cut his teeth as an Alaskan guide at Kulik Lodge chasing big Alaskan 'bows throughout Bristol Bay. However, his love for northern Michigan and its intimate fisheries brought him back to Boyne Country. As the Director of Operations for Boyne Outfitters, Ethan is able to introduce people to the cherished waters and fishing he has enjoyed for much of his life.
Ethan currently holds a Captain's License with the United States Coast Guard. He is a SAGE Elite Pro, Scientific Anglers Pro, Fly Designer and Pro Staffer for Catch Fly Fishing, a Costa Pro, a YETI Field Guide Sherpa, and a field advisor for several other major manufacturers. Ethan has been featured in American Angler, the Detroit Free Press, Game & Fish, Gink & Gasoline, The Venturing Angler, as well as Golf Advisor Round Trip on several occassions. He has also written articles for Hallowed Waters Journal and FFI Magazine.
Beyond northern Michigan, his love for travel has led him to some unbelievable experiences - saltwater fishing in Belize, the Bahamas, Gulf Florida & the Florida Keys; swingin' for steelhead in the legendary rivers of northern British Columbia, throughout Appalachia, the backcountry of Ontario, and across the American West in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana.
Giving back is important, and Ethan has previously served as the President of Friends of the Jordan River, as Vice President of Headwaters Chapter of Trout Unlimited, on the Board of Directors for the Miller Van Winkle Chapter of TU, as a Committee Advisor for the Pigeon River Country Advisory Council, and as an ambassador to Huron Pines. During college, he also founded the first collegiate affiliate of Trout Unlimited in the nation - Ferris Trout Unlimited - which helped ford the waters toward the creation of the TU's Costa 5 Rivers College Club program in use today. In 2019, he was awarded the John Walters Award by Headwaters TU, which is given "in recognition of stream champion" for his efforts to improve the fishery within the Jordan River watershed.
Ethan enjoys teaching beginners and pushes advanced anglers to hone their skills on the water. If you are new to the sport, or have a passion as strong as his, Ethan will make sure you have an enjoyable experience on the water. Ethan specializes in small stream technical fishing during creekin' season, freshwater flats fishing for smallmouth bass, two-handed fishing for steelhead & atlantic salmon, as well as individual casting instruction.

Greg joined the Boyne Outfitters crew in 2013... after a nearly ten-year sabbatical from the industry in order to focus on one of the most important things in life - family. He has been an asset ever since. Greg's experience stems from guiding for Streamside Orvis in Traverse City, as well as the former Whipporwill Orvis of Petoskey, where he learned the northern Michigan waters and fine-tuned his skills with a fly rod. He even sports a handmade McKenzie-style drifter which he floats on our home waters.
Greg loves the lyrical side of angling, where he has had works featured in Fly Rod & Reel, Gray's Sporting Journal, and Sporting Classics to name a few. He has also co-authored two books - Northwest of Someplace and Another Day Afield: Hunting, Fishing and the Places They Lead Us. During the off-season, Greg teaches elementary education, and consequently, his patience and teaching abilities truly shine through in his guiding.
Greg lives in Petoskey with his wife and two daughters.

Growing up a stone's throw from the Jordan River, Drew has spent his entire life fishing northwest Michigan. From small creek brookies behind his childhood home - to the smallies, esox and salmo species of the big waters - Drew has always had a rod in his hand. A handful of guide years now under his belt has only caused that passion to grow. Especially, the hunt for native fish in hard-to-reach places. You can find Drew in the shop, or on the river, always excited to chat about what is happening on our waters.
Enjoying our wild places in northern Michigan influenced Drew to give back. Drew is a member of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers and sits on the Board of Directors for Friends of the Jordan River. His service in these groups follows the greater mission - to ensure future generations enjoy the access and outdoor opportunities we hold in such high esteem.
Drew serves as a Field Advisor for Redington - fly fishing rods & reels for optimal performance.

With a family cottage located in northern Michigan, Matthew grew up fishing the Jordan Valley, as well as the surrounding streams and inland lakes during his childhood. After joining the Boyne Outfitters crew, Matthew made the full-time move to northern Michigan. Along with his solid base, he has traveled all over Michigan fishing for trout, salmon and steelhead. However, his favorite quarry is chasing brown trout, and he has devoted the majority of his free time to researching and learning more about these wonderful creatures. When Matthew isn't on the river, you may find him tying flies, kayaking the Jordan, or fly fishing warm water lakes for bass and pike. He has continually devoted his free time to expand his knowledge of fly fishing to ensure great times out on the water for his guests. Matthew always looks forward to the next season and what it brings to Boyne Outfitters.

Jake grew up fishing the classic trout waters of Montana. Ever since he picked up his first fly rod, Jake has been fascinated with all aspects of fly fishing including water ecology, entomology, fly tying, and of course...catching fish!
Fly fishing has given Jake the opportunity to guide on many different waters. Starting on the Bighorn river in Montana, to the Wind River Canyon in Wyoming and the Nushagak River in Alaska. After spending a summer as the head guide at Dave & Kim Egdorf's Western Alaska Sportfishing camp on the 'Upper Nush'. Jake spent the next 12 summers managing and guiding his family's fishing camp on the lower Nushagak. He also taught elementary education and coached for nearly a decade in western Montana - guiding each summer season in between.
Jake joined the Boyne Outfitters crew in the summer of 2014 when he and his family relocated to northern Michigan. Jake now spends his off-season as the Building Trades & Woodshop teacher at Petoskey High School. When he is not guiding for Boyne Outfitters during the summer months, Jake spends his time with his two boys and wife either building something, playing in the water, or fishing.
The one thing Jake enjoys the most about guiding is how excited people get when it all comes together and they feel the tug, whether it's their first fish ever or the fish of a lifetime. "That is why I guide."

Paul is a great example of "living the 'Boyne Lifestyle.'" His passion for the outdoors has taken him from Costa Rica to Alaska, the mountains of Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, plus many places in between! He grew up on the "big water" of Port Huron and then moved across state to finish college in Kalamazoo. His professional career took him to Metro Detroit where he lived for 32 years in Birmingham/ Bloomfield. In November of 2014, his wife suggested they relocate their family to their Boyne Mountain home and the rest is history.
Introduced to fly fishing in 1994 while on a steelhead trip to a "blown out" Pere Marquette river, he instantly fell in love with the beauty of one of Michigan's most famous rivers. Being brand new to fly fishing, he didn't know the fishing day was a total bust, but he was permanently hooked on the experience and the feeling of the river.
Now a northern Michigan resident, Paul enjoys many of the areas pleasures. Spring & Summer brings golf, backpacking, paddle boards and mountain bikes. Fall & Winter brings bows, guns, fat tires and skis - But fishing is always in season! Trout, salmon, steelhead, carp, brookies, bass and pike - there is always something to chase. Even in the shoulder seasons when others are looking out their windows wishing they had an excuse to get outside... Fishing is always the excuse!
Paul is a 37+ year veteran in the financial services industry and is married with 4 children. His youngest two boys graduated from Boyne City High School where he still coaches the golf team.

Travis' passion for fly fishing began on the headwaters of the fabled Blackfoot River of Montana at an early age. For several weeks each summer, it was all about chasing cutthroat through the icy-cold mountain streams. When not in Montana, Trav was at home trailing his dad around Michigan's Au Sable... chasing the hatches and learning the beauty of what Michigan has to offer.
Summers were quickly consumed by sleepless nights, lots of bug spray, and plenty of stories of "the one that got away." His desire to become a better angler trumped his desire for much anything else. Fortunate enough to find a career as an engineer in Northern Michigan became a dream realized, knowing that being a stone's throw away from northern Michigan waters meant days off could easily turn into fishing adventures.
Trav decided to give back to the rivers that have provided him endless joy by joining his local TU chapter - Headwaters Trout Unlimited - where he is now the Treasurer of the organization. However, he wanted to take his skill set a step even further, and joined the Boyne Outfitters team in 2020. He is driven by a desire to share his experiences and give others the same pleasure that fly fishing has offered him over the years.

Hailing originally from southwest Michigan, Kory was raised fishing for trout, steelhead and salmon across Michigan - from secluded Great Lakes' tributaries, to the larger drainages of the Muskegon, Pere Marquette and Manistee. He also pursued the warmwater opportunities on the east side of the state, chasing large smallies and northern pike in the Huron. However, trout fishing in northern Michigan was always the getaway experience Kory cherished as a kid.
As his passion grew, so did his need to fill it, and Kory took to the field of conservation, assisting the Kalamazoo Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited on macroinvertebrate sampling and in-stream projects. This didn't slow him down though, and Kory moved to Vermont, where he guided at the Fly Rod Shop in the mountain town of Stowe. He taught fly fishing in the shadows of the Green Mountains, chasing feisty brook trout, brown trout and rainbows in some of the most scenic, secluded river the eastern United States has to offer. As fun as he had in Vermont, the Pure Michigan waters of northern Michigan couldn't keep him away, and he stuck his roots down in Petoskey, where he is now dedicated to his pursuit on the wonderful waters in Boyne Outfitters' backyard. Kory is always looking to share with his guests the wonderful experience of trout fishing he has long prized, whether they're enjoying a new getaway adventure or have a life-long passion of angling.
